On Monday, June 8th, 1987, at approximately 7:30 in the evening, Carolyn Phillips exited the Kroger store at 711 Gallatin road and walked to her red Ford Tempo which was parked on the Eastland side of the building. She got into her car; put her groceries on the floor and her purse on the seat. A man that had been loitering in the lot approached her and demanded her money. She screamed and began blowing her horn. The man shot Carolyn and took off running east on Eastland avenue and then south on north 12th street where he was last seen running. Carolyn Phillips was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
At the time of the murder in 1987, the gunman was described as a dark complected male black, average height, medium build and around 30 years old. He had a slight beard, a jheri curl and a mustache. He was wearing jeans and no shirt. Witnesses said he had something in his hand that looked like a rolled up shirt.
