FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 26, 2007

School Resource Officers at Hillsboro High School today arrested a 17-year-old 9th grader after a loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol was found inside his vehicle in the school’s parking lot.

The student had dropped off a 15-year-old friend at Overton High School who appeared to be heavily under the influence. A School Resource Officer at Overton High School contacted the School Resource Officer at Hillsboro High School to alert him that the 17-year-old might also be under the influence. The Hillsboro High School principal questioned the student who admitted to smoking marijuana on the way to school. During a subsequent search of his vehicle, the weapon was found under the driver’s seat. The student told investigators the gun belonged to friends and that he was unaware it had been left inside the car.

The 17-year-old was charged at juvenile detention with carrying a gun on school property and simple possession of marijuana.
