Youth Services detectives early today charged the parents of a deceased three-month-old girl with aggravated child abuse after an autopsy found that the baby had two rib fractures, bruising behind her eyes, a head injury, and injuries to her bowel.
Nelson Aguilar Gomez, 27, and Florinda Lopez, 19, who live at Clairmont Apartments on Patricia Drive, brought their daughter, Azucena Lopez-Lajuj, to Baptist Hospital Saturday morning. They said they checked on her at about 9:30 a.m. and discovered she wasn’t breathing.
An autopsy Sunday determined that the child’s internal injuries were the result of abuse. Further testing is necessary to determine the cause of death.
The parents contend that they were the girl’s consistent caregivers. However, they disavow any knowledge of how their daughter received the injuries.
Gomez and Lopez, both originally from Guatemala, are each being held in lieu of $250,000 bond. A federal immigration hold is also being placed on both defendants because they are suspected of illegally entering the United States.
