Metro Police patch

North Precinct detectives continue in their efforts to identify the gunman who fatally wounded former Metro police officer Ben Word at 2131 15th Avenue North Monday night.

Word, 63, who lived on Lewis Street in Madison, and a friend were visiting with an 81-year-old woman on her front porch when three young men approached from across the street. One of them asked for a cigarette and then suddenly pulled a pistol. He demanded the victims’ belongings. Word struggled with the gunman in an effort to disarm him. During the struggle, Word was shot in the back. The gunman and his two friends ran from the scene. Word was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The gunman is described as a black man who is believed to be in his early 20’s. He is approximately 5’8” tall, weighs approximately 190 pounds, may have a mustache, and was wearing a dark baggy shirt. Anyone knowing his identity is urged to contact North Precinct Investigations at 862-7901 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Word worked as a Metro police officer for 19 years. He left the force in September 1992.
