FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 18, 2007

The Metropolitan Police Department’s very successful Operation Safer Streets gang enforcement initiative enters its second year this weekend.

Begun on May 19, 2006, Operation Safer Streets teams detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division with plain clothed patrol officers and federal law enforcement agents on weekend nights to target streets and neighborhoods with a known gang presence. Locations throughout the county are covered each weekend.

“The work of the dedicated officers taking part in Operation Safer Streets is providing the police department with invaluable intelligence information on gang members and activities,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Additionally, the neighborhood visits by gang enforcement teams at various and unpredictable times is helping to prevent crime and violence.”

During the past year, Operation Safer Streets has resulted in 1,221 arrests on 242 felony charges and 1,338 misdemeanor charges. The initiative led to 290 drug seizures, 42 gun seizures, the service of 295 outstanding warrants, 499 field interviews of persons believed to have gang knowledge, and 2,480 traffic stops in areas with a gang presence.
