
The Metropolitan Police Department’s very successful Operation Safer Streets gang enforcement initiative entered its second year this Friday and Saturday with 36 arrests including three felonies, 42 misdemeanors, and eleven outstanding warrants. Seizures included 44.6 grams of marijuana, 4.5 grams of cocaine, and one pill.
At least once a week, officers and supervisors representing each of the six precincts and the Specialized Investigations Division (SID) partner together to implement strategies to combat gang crimes and activities in various areas of Nashville.
Friday’s enforcement consisted of seven SID detectives and six patrol officers. Areas targeted were 23rd Avenue North at Osage Street, 16th Avenue North at Buchanan Street, Buena Vista, the Edgehill Area, Harding Place, Tampa Drive, Nolensville Pike, Packard Drive, and Haywood Lane.
Saturday’s enforcement consisted of 15 SID detectives, and seven patrol officers. Areas targeted were University Court, J.C. Napier Court, Shelby Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, the James Cayce public housing development, Porter Road, the Litton Apartments, 14th Avenue North at Ireland Street, 16th Avenue North at Jo Johnston Avenue, Trimble Bottoms, Murfreesboro Pike at Fesslers Lane, 23rd Avenue North at Osage Street, Buchanan Street, Clarksville Highway, Jefferson Street, and Clay Street.
Prior to this weekend, Operation Safer Streets has resulted in 1,221 arrests on 242 felony charges and 1,338 misdemeanor charges. The initiative led to 290 drug seizures, 42 gun seizures, the service of 295 outstanding warrants, 499 field interviews of persons believed to have gang knowledge, and 2,480 traffic stops in areas with a gang presence.
