Metro police officers will be doing all they can to prevent the Memorial Day weekend from being marred by highway tragedies caused by intoxicated, impaired, or aggressive drivers.
Off-duty officers being paid through a grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office will join Traffic, DUI Squad, and precinct-based officers in paying close attention to the interstate system as well as roadways leading to and from area lakes.
Locations targeted for sobriety checkpoints on Memorial Day include Anderson Road, Bell Road near Percy Priest Lake, and Old Hickory Boulevard near Lakewood.
“Buckling up and obeying traffic laws will go a long way in keeping drivers and their families safe this weekend,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Drinking and driving will be a major point of emphasis for our officers.”
A minimum of 12 additional officers per day will be on area roadways beginning tonight through Memorial Day.
