FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 10, 2007

The driver of a van killed in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 40 West at the Briley Parkway exchange is identified as Robert Davis, 72, of Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee.

Davis was transporting music students from nine different states from the Nashville International Airport to Victor Wooten’s Bass/Nature Camp at Montgomery Bell State Park near Dickson when the front seat passenger saw him suddenly slump over the wheel at 1:30 p.m. The van veered to the right and traversed a deep ravine before traveling over the Briley Parkway entrance ramp onto I-40 West crashing through both guardrails before hurtling down a steep embankment where it stopped after hitting a TVA electrical tower.

Davis was transported to Summit Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A 21-year-old student with a pre-existing heart condition was also transported to Summit Medical Center as a precautionary measure. She was treated and released.

Twelve students were on board the 15 passenger private transport van. Most of the students are in their late teens and early twenties.

Musician Victor Wooten arrived on the scene and provided transportation for the students to his camp.

The primary cause of this fatal accident appears to be medical in nature.
