
The Metropolitan Police Department’s very successful Operation Safer Streets gang enforcement initiative on Sunday moved over the 1,000 mark for arrests so far this year and, thanks to a $228,000 dollar federal grant, an additional day of enforcement per week has been added for at least the foreseeable future.
Begun on May 19, 2006, Operation Safer Streets teams detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division with plain clothed patrol officers and federal law enforcement agents on weekend nights to target streets and neighborhoods with a known gang presence. Locations throughout the county are covered each week.
Last weekend’s Operation Safer Streets gang enforcement initiative, which took place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon and evening resulted in 61 arrests involving 74 misdemeanors, eleven felonies, and five outstanding warrants. Seized were 11.3 grams of cocaine, 132.4 grams of marijuana, one weapon, one vehicle, 32 various pills, and $1,230 cash.
Friday’s enforcement consisted of 14 SID detectives, six patrol officers, and one OPA lieutenant. Areas targeted include the Madison area, Madison Park, Gallatin Pike at Trinity Lane, Otay Street at Chase Street, Chester Avenue, 28th and 40th Avenues North at Clifton Avenue, Georgia Court, Nolensville Pike at Old Hickory Boulevard, Harding Place at Tampa Drive, and Richards Road.
Saturday’s enforcement consisted of six SID detectives and seven patrol officers. Areas targeted include 28th Avenue North at Herman Street, Trinity Lane at the I-65 interchange and at Brick Church Pike, 10th Avenue South at Acklen Avenue, 12th Avenue South at Argyle Avenue, Charles E. Davis Boulevard at Lafayette Street, Wedgewood Avenue at the I-65 interchange, the 1300 block of Southside Court, 12th Avenue South at Summit Avenue, 9th Avenue North at Buchanan street, Garfield Street at Delta Avenue, Murfreesboro Pike at Fesslers Lane, 27th and 24th Avenues North at Clifton Avenue, Charlotte Pike, Jo Johnston Avenue, Edgehill Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, 8th Avenue South at Vernon Avenue, Scovel Street at Ed Temple Boulevard, 28th Avenue North at Jefferson Street, 1st Avenue South at Mildred Shute Avenue, the 1500 hundred block of 9th Avenue North, and Hillside Avenue at Wade Avenue.
Sunday’s enforcement consisted of eight SID detectives and six patrol officers. Areas targeted were Anderson Road, the James Cayce public housing development, 1500 Porter Road, Chester Avenue, and 28th Avenue North at Clifton Avenue.
