The Crisis Negotiation Team working closely with SWAT officers Wednesday successfully ended a four ½ hour standoff involving a suicidal man.
Michael Willoughby, 47, called crisis counselors repeatedly beginning at 4 a.m. He told them he had a gun and was contemplating taking his own life.
The standoff began at 10:30 a.m. when West Precinct officers, checking on Willoughby’s welfare, knocked on his door. He refused to answer and threatened to harm himself or others, if anyone attempted to enter his West End Terrace apartment at 261 White Bridge Pike.
After exhaustive efforts by the Crisis Negotiator Team to persuade Willoughby to come out of his apartment reached an impasse, Swat officers deployed a form of tear gas at 3 p.m. Willoughby exited his apartment and was taken into custody.
No weapons were located on Willoughby or in his apartment.
Willoughby, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated, was not injured. He was taken to Mobile Crisis for a mental evaluation.
