FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 16, 2007

Raids by Crime Suppression Unit officers from the East and West Precincts over the past two days have resulted in the seizure of more than $21,500 worth of counterfeit CDs and DVDs from two stores.

The raids were conducted based on information given the police department by investigators from the Recording Industry and Motion Picture Associations of America who had determined that counterfeit recordings were being sold from Key 2 Music on Douglas Avenue and Platinum Bound Records on Jefferson Street.

Seized Wednesday from Key 2 Music were 828 counterfeit CDs valued at $11,376. Arrested on charges of criminal simulation and counterfeiting was store clerk Marvin Whitworth, 35, of North 2nd Street. Arrest warrants covering the same charges are outstanding against store owner Edgar Eugene Key, 32, of Ladybird Court.

Seized today from Platinum Bound Records were 555 counterfeit CDs and 104 counterfeit DVDs (pirated movies) valued at $10,156, along with a .40-caliber pistol. Arrested on two counts of criminal simulation each were store employees Detreke Hayes, 34, of Hickoryview Drive, and Brent Buford, 30, of North 2nd Street.

The recording industry estimates that pirated and counterfeit CDs and DVDs worldwide represent $6 billion worth of lost revenue.
