FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 10, 2007

The case against two men found to be transporting more than 2 ½ pounds of crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated $319,000 through Nashville is headed to the Davidson County Grand Jury after a preliminary hearing today.

Jose Reyes Acuna, 27, a legal U.S. resident of Elizabethton, Tennessee, was stopped on I-40 East near Old Hickory Boulevard Friday after the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche he was driving was seen weaving onto the shoulder of the interstate.

Acuna told police that the Avalanche wasn’t his and that he was merely driving it to Texas to retrieve a vehicle he had left there a month ago. Riding with Acuna was Jilberto Chavez Hernandez, 35, of Dallas, who said he was on vacation and that the truck belonged to his brother. Both men consented to a search of the Avalanche. Police dog Raven checked the vehicle and alerted to the presence of a drug odor. Hidden underneath the truck were three bundles of crystal methamphetamine. Acuna and Hernandez are charged with possession of crystal meth for resale. An immigration hold has been placed on Hernandez because he is suspected of illegally entering the United States.
