The suspect in a crime spree critically injured Sunday when he crashed a stolen Jeep on Highway 70 is identified as Eric Lamont Hobbs, 36, of Eve Circle.
Events began to unfold at 8 a.m. when a Saturn was reported stolen from a Premier Drive home that had been burglarized. At 12:30 p.m., a 48-year-old woman pulled into her Stoneway Trail residence and Hobbs drove in behind her in the stolen Saturn. He got out of the car and demanded the woman’s purse. She refused, but after a brief struggle, he wrestled it away from her and fled in the Saturn. The woman notified police.
A Belle Meade officer spotted the suspect car on Highway 70 at 1 p.m. The driver refused to pull over and crashed the car on Percy Warner Boulevard. Hobbs fled on foot and stole a Jeep Wrangler parked nearby. Belle Meade officers again attempted to stop him on Highway 70. At the intersection of Highway 70 and Colice Jeanne Road, the suspect ran a red light, collided with another vehicle, ran off the roadway, and overturned. Hobbs was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the Jeep. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is in critical condition.
Metro Police have obtained arrest warrants charging Hobbs with robbery and two counts of auto theft.
Hobbs is a registered ex-con. He was paroled in June after serving 13 years of a 20- year sentence for a 1994 aggravated robbery in Nashville. He will be booked on the warrants once he is discharged from the hospital.
