The second suspect from a pair of weekend carjackings is in custody. An investigation by East Precinct Detective Curtis Hafley led to Monday’s arrest of Charles James, 20, of Cheyenne Trace.
James and Cody Cruz, 21, of Barrel Drive, are accused of coordinating the robberies in a parking garage at 3rd Avenue North and Church Street early Saturday morning.
Cruz, armed with a rifle, demanded the keys to a Chevrolet Monte Carlo as James, armed with a pistol, stole a Pontiac Grand Prix at 2 a.m.
South Precinct Officers Gerry Hutcheson and Joshua Baker were driving down Church Street when they were flagged down by the victims. As Cruz attempted to drive out of the garage, Officers Hutcheson and Baker ordered him out of the car. Cruz, still in possession of an assault rifle, complied and was taken into custody without incident. Cruz admitted to the robbery and was positively identified by the victim.
James got out of the stolen Grand Prix when Officers Hutcheson and Baker arrived and fled the parking garage on foot.
James and Cruz are both charged with two counts of carjacking and unlawful weapon possession. Each is being held in lieu of $210,000 bond.
