Convicted Kentucky murderer and robber Layw Mouzon Thomas, who escaped from house arrest in Clarksville last October, is under investigation for Thursday’s robbery of a Brick Church Pike uniform store as well as potential other crimes in Nashville.
Thomas, 19, is hospitalized and under guard at Vanderbilt University Medical Center recovering from a gunshot wound to his torso. North Precinct detectives believe it likely that Thomas was accidentally shot by an accomplice during Thursday afternoon’s 12:15 p.m. attempted robbery of City Uniform at 3063 Brick Church Pike. Three suspects came into the business. One of them pulled a gun and was grabbed by one of the employees. The gunman broke free and fired the pistol before fleeing with the two others.
A short time after the attempted robbery, Thomas arrived at Skyline Medical Center by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He claimed to have accidentally shot himself, but that appeared unlikely given the nature of the wound. Police were called, and an identity check revealed that Thomas had escaped from house arrest while awaiting sentencing on homicide and robbery convictions from Oak Grove, Kentucky.
North Precinct detectives working the uniform store case have developed evidence linking Thomas to that crime; however no robbery charges have been placed against Thomas in Nashville at present. Thomas remains under investigation in that case and other North Nashville robberies.
Thomas, who had been staying at Knoll Crest Apartments on Creekwood Drive, is named in a fugitive from justice arrest warrant issued in Nashville Thursday night. He will be immediately jailed upon his release from the hospital.
*A picture of Layw Thomas is not being released by Metro Police at present so as not to jeopardize photo lineups that will be shown to victims of recent robberies.
