Criminal charges will be the likely outcome of an investigation begun Sunday into cock fighting in South Nashville.
South Precinct Officers John Harrell and Jarrad Rikal, responding to an anonymous complaint that animal fighting was occurring in the rear of 14690 Old Hickory Boulevard, encountered a crowd estimated at 50 to 60 persons standing around a chicken coop. When the group realized that officers were on the scene, everyone ran into a large wooded area behind the property.
Metro Animal Control personnel and Detective Pete Dusche from the police department’s Specialized Investigations Division (SID) responded. Thirty-two live roosters, two dead ones, and cock fighting paraphernalia were found. Two of the live roosters were injured badly enough that they had to be euthanized by Animal Control staff.
The investigation is centering on identifying the person(s) responsible for organizing or promoting the cock fight. No one has been arrested at this point.
