FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 29, 2008

Central Precinct detectives late Monday night arrested a second suspect and swore out a warrant against a third in connection with the Election Commission laptop computer theft investigation.

Randal Logan Cheek, 27, is charged with theft of property for having knowledge that the stolen laptops were fenced at his business, The Muse, at 835 4th Avenue South. A search warrant executed at The Muse on January 17 resulted in the recovery of a computer router stolen from the Election Commission, along with a hard drive from one of the stolen laptops. Cheek began cooperating with detectives on the afternoon of January 17. He surrendered to Detective Rick Mavity Monday night after being told to do so. Cheek’s bond was set at $5,000.

An arrest warrant charging theft was also issued Monday night against Brent Russell Rucker, 28, of Charlotte, Tennessee. The investigation by Detectives Mavity and Ricky Winfrey shows that Rucker, an employee of The Muse, actually bought the stolen computer equipment on Christmas Eve, a short time after the Election Commission office was burglarized. Rucker sold the laptops to a Goodlettsville man. They were recovered from the buyer on the night of January 17th. The buyer is deemed a witness in the investigation.

Efforts to locate Rucker Monday afternoon and evening were unsuccessful. He remains at large. Anyone seeing Rucker or knowing his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Robert Osbourne, who admits to committing the actual burglary, was arrested on the morning of January 17.

Detectives Mavity and Winfrey do not anticipate charging anyone else in this case.
