FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 3, 2008

A citizen’s anonymous tip led to the discovery of a marijuana grow operation inside a home on Fairfax Avenue and the issuance of arrest warrants against the man believed responsible.

Ari S. Williams, 36, faces charges of marijuana possession for resale, manufacturing marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges are enhanced due to the fact that the 2525 Fairfax Avenue home in which Williams was living is within 1,000 feet of Eakin School.

West Precinct undercover officers executed a search warrant at the home last Wednesday. They found a large-scale grow operation in which five “mother” marijuana plants were being cloned to produce other plants. Seized from the residence were 228 marijuana plants, more than seven pounds of processed marijuana, grow lights, a track system for the lighting, and plant nutrients.

Williams was not home when officers arrived and remains at large. His present whereabouts are not known, although detectives have received word that he intends to surrender.

“Many of the police department’s drug investigations result from citizen tips,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Our officers, such as those in Sergeant Gene Donegan’s West Precinct undercover unit, take those tips seriously. Sometimes the investigations lead to large significant seizures, as was the case here.”

Persons wanting to report drug activity can do so anonymously by calling 244-DOPE. There is also a link on the police department’s Internet site for the reporting of criminal activity.
