FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 25, 2008

East Precinct detectives this afternoon arrested three men in connection with last September’s murder of 21-year-old Cory Wayne Sanders, who was gunned down outside his 2912 Highland Avenue home.

Devonta Cunningham, 20, of Jones Avenue, Deaundra Smith, 19, of Cleveland Street, and William Gentry Davis, 20, of Shelton Avenue, are all named in grand jury indictments charging first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery.

The investigation, headed by Detective Curtis Hafley, shows that Cunningham set up a drug-related robbery of Sanders. Smith, Davis, and Ashton Gaines, 19, went to Sanders’ home under the pretense of buying drugs. Sanders was fatally wounded while being robbed of marijuana and cash. Smith is believed to have been the triggerman.

Gaines, the getaway driver, was arrested on murder and robbery conspiracy charges last October.
