FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 15, 2008

Three teenagers and a 20-year-old are all charged with aggravated kidnapping for last night’s brief abduction of a 15-year-old girl from outside her Joseph Avenue home.

Jailed are Joseph Dejuan Jones, 18, of South 7th Street, Anthony Sanders, 18, of Dickerson Pike, Vence Barbee, 20, of New Town Road, and Corneshia Haynes, 19, of Riverside Drive.

Detectives believe that Jones was seeking to retaliate against the 15-year-old because he thought she had set him up to be assaulted in the recent past. The investigation shows that Jones and his co-defendants drove to the victim’s home in the 500 block of Joseph Avenue just before midnight. The girl came outside and began talking to Jones. Jones showed a pistol, told the girl he was going to kill her, and struck her in the face several times. Jones and Sanders then dragged the victim to the trunk of Jones’ car while the other two co-defendants watched. As the four suspects prepared to leave with the girl, Jones opened the trunk and pulled her out to make sure she didn’t have a cell phone. At that point, she managed to pull away and run to safety. The defendants fled in the car, a description of which was telephoned to the police department.

Moments after the car description was broadcast, Officer Derek Keeler spotted it on Woodland Street and made a traffic stop. There was blood on the trunk lid and the rear bumper. Jones claimed ownership of two guns recovered from his car. In addition to aggravated kidnapping, Jones is also charged violating the Crooks with Guns statute.

Jones is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond. Haynes is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. Bail for Sanders and Barbee was set at $75,000 each.

The 15-year-old was treated at Vanderbilt Medical Center for a broken nose and other facial injury caused by the pistol-whipping.
