Crime Drops During First Quarter of 2006

April 12, 2006 -- Overall major crime in Nashville during the first three months of this year fell to a 1st quarter five-year low and dropped 12.9% when compared with the first quarter of 2005. Violent crime was down 9.6%. Property crime fell 13.6%.

Six of the seven major crime reporting categories reflected decreases during the first three months of this year. Auto theft led the decline (down 22.3%), followed by homicide (down 20%), aggravated assault (down 13.6%), burglary (down 13%), larceny (down 12.5%) and rape (down 11%).

Five of the major crime reporting categories recorded 1st quarter five-year lows. They include rape, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft.

Robbery was the sole category reflecting an increase. It was up 1.1%.

“I am extremely proud of the police officers in every component of this department, along with members of our professional support staff, who are working everyday to make a difference and enhance the safety of Nashville’s families and guests,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Community leaders and parents can help by continuing to partner with us and discouraging teenagers and young adults from resorting to criminal acts. This is especially important during the upcoming critical summer months.”
